I started out making jewelry from seed beads. Earrings, mostly. Then I bought other kinds of beads & started to make necklaces. My family liked them & bought them from me. Well now since I had gotten the jewelry making bug I started seeing all kinds of possibilities all around me in nature. Since we eat a lot of stone crabs I started looking at those claws with a different eye. No longer were they just crabs, they were now something to be incorporated into jewelry, somehow, someway. I saved the claws, bought some polymer clay & started making stone crab claw pendants using polymer clay as the bail. Mahogany trees - our yard is full of them. Have you ever seen the seen pods from a mahogany tree? They are pretty cool! The pod splits into five sections - the outer section is very hard & is lined with a more flexible layer. This all surrounds a center against which layers of seeds lay. The shape of the seeds leave an indentation in that flexible layer giving it a nice texture. Soooo the hard outer sections became mahogany bugs, the inner layer became earrings & the center became a pendant, and there again I used polymer clay to make the bail.

My dad went to one of those places in North Carolina where you could hound for different kinds of stones & gems. He bought a tumbler & started tumbling all kinds of rocks & had jars of them all around the house. Since I was into making jewelry with different kinds of stuff from nature I asked him if I could have his tumbled stones because I wanted to make jewelry out of them. Of course he gave them to me plus the tumbler & a Diamond Pacific Genie, which I had no clue what to do with that, so it sat around for about a year before I ever got it cranked up. One thing led to another - I bought a saw so I could cut my own rock, cranked up the Genie & started learning how to polish my own rocks & that's where all my beautiful cabochons come from. I learned how to wire wrap & I am still learning the art of lapidary & wire wrapping. I enjoy a challenge so I like it when someone asks me to make something for them. I may not know how when I start but by the time I am done I will have learned something new. My shop is called Donnies Treasures because the things I like to use best are the earth's treasures. The treasures I create are for those special people who are my customers. Some things may take a while to sell but I believe it's because that special person it was created for hasn't found it yet. I just have to be patient & wait until that happens. In the meantime I am enjoying the heck out of myself cutting, polishing, wrapping & creating all kinds of special somethings.
